Chronicle-Tribune - Teen’s got drive: "Although Van Buren resident Tyler Frazier may be new to high school, he’s not new to the sport of lawn mower racing.

The 15-year-old has been racing lawn mowers on various circuits for four years now, but all have been a healthy day’s drive away for the Frazier Mowersports team.

Friday, Frazier made his debut at the Twelve Mile 500 in the small town of Twelve Mile, located 12 miles from Peru, Rochester and Logansport each."

Grass-roots racing: It's a gas for N. Indiana residents | IndyStar.com | The Indianapolis Star: "Lawn mower racing was invented here, at Plank Hill Park, otherwise known as “The Twelve Mile 500 International Motor Speedway.”

The race has been run since 1963, after the town suffered a handful of road fatalities over the holiday weekend and the Lions Club decided to have an event that would keep people occupied and in town for the day. A local Chevy dealer came up with the idea, although he was at first rebuffed."

Country Magazine - Country Roads-The Other Indy 500 : "When your pockets aren’t deep enough to race a car, the next best thing is a riding lawn mower. At least, that’s what folks in Twelve Mile, Indiana think.

The Twelve Mile 500 Riding Lawn Mower Race has become an institution in Indiana. Since 1963, guys and gals with lots of yard pride have put their riding mowers to the test in Twelve Mile.

“Indiana is a racing state, so we named it the 500 and patterned the rules after the race in Indianapolis,” says Mark Lowe, one of the race organizers.

That means 33 lawn mowers must complete 60 laps around a 1/4-mile track with a pit crew on standby.
There are two divisions—Briggs and modified. Regular mowers race in the Briggs division, while souped-up mowers battle it out in the modified division.

“It’s akin to Joes versus pros,” Mark says. The race began as a fund-raiser for the Twelve Mile Lions Club and is still hometown-run.

So if you’re feeling the need for speed, the race is July 4."

Pharos-Tribune - Sibling rivalry to be rekindled at Twelve Mile 500: "John Troyer really wants to win the Twelve Mile 500 Riding Lawnmower Race.

He’s been in position before, but in 19 tries he has yet to get over the hump. On top of that, the all-time winningest driver of the event happens to be his brother Randy Troyer. John knows exactly how many titles he needs to win to catch his brother.

“Unfortunately, I’m reminded all too often that my brother Randy has won seven times,” John lamented.

John is in prime position for a win this year as he’s the pole-sitter in both the Modified Division and the Briggs Division for this year’s 46th running of the Twelve Mile 500, which is set to get underway at 1 p.m. on the Fourth of July at Plank Hill Park in Twelve Mile."

Pharos-Tribune - Records set in Twelve Mile 500 qualifying: "A pair of records were set in qualifications for the Twelve Mile 500 Lawnmower Riding Race time trials at Plank Hill Park on Sunday, June 8.

A record number of 53 racers participated in the qualifications. And for the first time ever, a driver won the pole for both the modified race and the Briggs race. John Troyer, Denver, pulled off the double pole position feat.

A total of 36 mowers qualified for the Briggs race with only 33 places available. Plans are in the works for a 10-lap qualifier race for the 33rd position. More mowers are expected to qualify on race day on July 4."

TWELVE MILE - For one lawnmower racer Friday, it was a day of firsts.

At the 46th running of the Twelve Mile 500, Claypool resident and Roann, Ind., native Todd Martin came away with the checkers in his fifth attempt at the grueling Grand-Prix style course.

“It feels great,” Martin said. “I had a good handling mower all day, and I didn't get caught for speeding, so that helped.”
